• Fitting a new boiler is most of the time a simple one day job

If the new boiler is to be fitted in the same position as the old one.

Should the boiler be relocated to a new position,

It will involve more work and more time.

If you are converting to a combination type boiler,

This involves removing the storage tanks and converting the pipework over to work with the combination boiler, so more time is involved.

All new gas and oil boilers today here in the United Kingdom are condensing type.

they are more efficient than the previous models where up to 40% of the heat produced went out of the flue pipe.

A new boiler today is now around 90% efficient saving on fuel bills of around 30%

If fitting a new boiler to your property there are now a few other things that are advised to be carried out as well.

One of the recommendations is fitting thermostatic control valves to the radiators, this is called best practice.

Also, you will need to have a room thermostat, this is called a central thermostat.

You also need to have a time clock that controls the on and off times for the central heating.

Once the new boiler has been fitted, the whole heating system needs to be flushed out, to get rid of any sludge and debris from within the system.

It really should be flushed out before the new boiler is fitted.

But most of the time, it gets flushed once the new boiler if fitted.

When choosing a new boiler there are many to choose from,

You have gas boilers, both natural and LPG,

    Oil boilers and electric models.

Many boilers now have a longer flue option than the previous models,

So they could now be located in the middle of the room if required.

When it comes to fitting a new boiler it’s a good idea to upgrade all the controls at the same time.

The heating system will be drained down so it’s worth doing.

You could change any valves that may be showing signs of leakage, change the pump for a new efficient one,

Change any zone valves that may be fitted to the system.

If you have a new boiler fitted and six months down the line the pump or a zone valve breakdown.

You have to drain the system down to replace these parts, you are not going to be very happy.

So that’s why it’s advisable to change these parts while the system is drained.

Also when the system is refilled with water, most of the time inhibitor is not added.

I don’t know why this happens, but it seems to be forgotten.

Anytime a system is drained inhibitor should always be added on the refill.

The warranty on a new boiler today can be up to 10 years.

Which is a long time considering the lifespan on a boiler is around 8 to 10 years.

If you google lifespan of a boiler and the results show around 8 to 10 years. This I must state all depends on how your new boiler has been looked after.

Most people for some reason have a new boiler fitted,

Get a warranty and think that we don’t have to worry about the boiler.

Because if it breakdown they are covered for a free repair, this is not true.

If you read the paperwork that came with the new boiler it states that the warranty is only valid so long as the new boiler is serviced each year.

Inside the installation booklet for the new boiler is a document called a benchmark it’s normally located at the back of the booklet.

This has to be filled in by the installer,

Its classed as a legal document and must always be filled in and signed by the installer.

If this document is not filled in then there’s a chance should you need a warranty call you will not be covered.

On the opposite page to the benchmark is a service booklet, each time the boiler is serviced this also has to be filled in by the Gas Safe installer and signed.

This is confirmation to the Boilermakers that the boiler has been serviced by a qualified engineer, and should there be a problem they can contact the engineer for further information.
